Totally obsessed with Raphael Saadiq's new album Stone Rollin'. You can listen to it in it's entirety as well as read a nice blurb about him on NPR's First Listen. Its everything I have been looking for in new music for the summer and new music in general. He is playing at Park West in Chicago, IL on June 3rd. I will definitely be there with a vodka tonic in my hand and some liquid liner on my eyes. Flash back soul is just too good.

I am finally moving on up, and moving on out of my brothers apartment in Chicago. My brutal search, known as an "apartment hunt" has finally come to an end. Living with people was my first prefernce, but after spending all day long with people in a tall office building, that little person inside of me wants to sit quietly and watch re-runs of Seinfeld while I make stuff. Another big criteria in my apartment hunt was to have enough space for me to make art again. Its just been so long. Although one could argue that I could make art anywhere, but not when youre living with your older sibling who watches tv all night long in your "bed room" aka the living that is rightfully his. So, with no further Audie, I have found a wonderful studio apartment that I will convert into a magical studio space as well. The kitchen is big enough to fit 10 families, so I figure why not make half of that space a working area. Like I cook anyways? Pshhh. Being a machine at work has made me so anxious to just create! This weekend I will begin Letterpress classes at Lilli Street Art Center in Ravenswood and I could not be more excited! Sometimes I wish I just worked at Whole Foods decorating desserts, something mindless and numbing, and focus on things I truly care about like.....making stuff.

Last night I went to the Stephen Eichhorn opening of his show Flowers at Ebermore Gallery in Chicago, IL. Watching the video above a couple months ago, I was immediately obsessed with his work and process. So when I heard about the show, I trecked all the way across downtown to check it out, and it was beautiful and exciting.
I'm not going to make some hoity-toity art critique about the show and hist work, I just very much enjoyed it and am really excited about art in Chicago.

Thomas Demand is an artist I think about a lot. He is a German photographer and sculptor who creates all his scenes completely out of paper. He photographs these scenes, then they are destroyed. So many amazing conversations can begin simply along that last description of his work. This here is an amazing video(or GIF animation) created entirely of photographic images of a paper scene:

"The film presumably shows a fast-paced tracking shot through the tunnel in which Lady Diana Spencer, Princess of Wales, died in a car crash. At first the viewer seems to remember seeing these images in the media. But in reality the set is a true to life, cardboard mock-up of architectural details. Under closer inspection, one also realizes that instead of reproducing reality Thomas Demand creates a perfectly-constructed model world. The cleverly-lit cardboard scenery takes up an incident of recent history and, in doing so, mirrors the illusionary features of what appear to be familiar images. In the process, the construction, representation and repetition of reality create a complex weaving of connections. I work at Zocalo Group right now, a WOM marketing and Social Media Agency. Every quarter Zocalo Group comes out with something called a Recommendation Index, which is quite interesting. It is the top most recommended companies in a particular category (i.e. casual dining, hotels, etc.). For this quarters Recommendation Index the category was most recommended rewards programs. With that top 10 list, my fellow Social Media Team members and I devised a way to further reward those reward program participants. By "showing us" your reward through pictures or video on twitter, while including the #recindex, we will pick a winner in 2 weeks to win a prize. I was asked to create a fun and dynamic logo for this program and in a way brand the contest. I am really happy with the way it came out.

Zocalo Group - Driving Sustainable Word of Mouth Marketing

Last week Strabucks unveiled their new logo and the blog reels were rolling! Sarah Alexander, designer at Zocalo Group, hopped on that band wagon and put her two cents in, here. Now that all the hype has cooled down a bit, a highly esteemed corporate and brand identity blog, Brand New, recently posted an article asking their readers to name their Top 5 Logos of all time. Stemming from the Creative Review's April issue focusing on the Best 20 Logos Ever. The logos to be collected would be really interesting to see, but I am assuming the usual suspects (i.e. apple, nike, fedex, etc.) to be on that list. Being a human, and having my own opinions, I decided to "drink the kool-aid" and make my own "Best Logos Ever" list of familiar marks in our society that I find fascinating and hopefully will end up being on the Creative Review's prestigious list.

In no particular order, let's begin:
1. Dunkin' Donuts

What I like about the Dunkin' Donuts logo is how well it conveys the company's overall attitude. Oh, and how gosh-darn cute it is! C'mon, donuts are just as cute as they are tasty. The round and candy colored font illustrates the company's main product immediately, which makes it so successful and memorable. The addition of the coffee cup symbol conveys its other famous product, their no-fuss coffee. The delightful illustration doesn't detract at all from the text; in turn, it enhances the wonderfully simple elements of the text to great sophistication. There is a lovely balance in the logo that many other companies have trouble achieving and Dunkin' Donuts has truly accomplished that.

2. Target

The Target logo is its clean and simple. Similar to Starbucks (which is now embedded in all Target stores), they dropped the word target all together. (SYMBOLS, SYMBOLS EVERYWHERE!) The logo itself is very recognizable and correlates to how one feels when they are in a target store or purchasing a target product. They feel they are getting the best product for the best price, which is a "target" consumers try to achieve in their daily purchasing lives. That is the message I get from the logo and is incredibly effective.

3. I <3 NY

Not the official logo of NYC, but one of the most recognized and mass produced images of, probably, all time, (except for the Mona Lisa) the I <3 NY logo is everything a good logo should be. It is direct, simple, and has a strong emotional element. Those three things make for an iconic and timeless logo and that is why I find it fascinating.

4. Intelligentsia

I love the Intelligentsia logo! Not because I enjoy supporting local businesses and deeply love coffee, but because it is elegant, sophisticated, and holds no "bells and whistles" just like their product. The elements work very well together and each piece serves a purpose. The star either represents their roots in Chicago (stars on the Chicago flag) or it could be interpreted as the North Star (pointing the way to where you should go to get your coffee). The type is bold, but isn't heavy enough to take away from the symbol of the clever hybrid of a coffee cup in the middle of a set of wings. The wings are a brilliant and simple way of communicating this idea that Intelligentsia coffee will make you fly, figuratively of course. Maybe I am looking too much into all these symbols and searching for meaning, but all in all, the logo is beautiful and has presence competitors like Starbucks and Caribou Coffee cannot compete with.

These four logos may not end up on the Best Logos list or even be considered good by "top" designers, but as an up-and-coming designer, in a world were logo designs and re-designs make national headlines, I feel like sharing my opinion on logos is just as important to express as someone with an Masters Degree in Design from Yale. In the end it is all subjective, so please, "drink the kool-aid" with me and share your thoughts!

Remembering Nick Solsman

My very good friend, Danny Solsman, came to me this summer with an idea for a tattoo to memorialize his brother, Nick Solsman, who passed away back in March of 2010. Danny came up with this idea of a film strip placed with photographs of his brother from when he was a baby to the most recent of him and Danny. It was asked of me to begin an illustration of this idea. With the amazing addition of local, Columbus, OH tattoo artist, Scott Santee the tattoo truly came to life.

It was truly an honor to help memorialize a dear friend's brother with something that will be part of him for the rest of his life.

Old Room, Same Pijamas

I am home in Columbus, OH for the weekend. This is the first time I have slept on a real bed in three months; and it's mine.

The walls, shelves, table, closet, bed spread; they are all empty. The only evidence of my former existence in this room is a plastic rolly-chair floor mat that is covered in crazy puffy paint/acrylic creatures and figures that I painted in high school when all I did was sit in my room listening to AFI and Interpol drawing and dreaming of places that were far beyond the boundaries of good 'ole Hilliard, OH.

Fast forward six or seven years later...I am laying, stomach flat, in the middle of this empty and surprisingly spacious room about to blast some Madonna and dance around and do cartwheels in my Hello Kitty pijamas. I guess in this situation less is more, and that is perfectly fine with me.

Am I Elaine Benes?

Over this past summer (May 2010-August 2010) my good friends Carolyn Slebodnik and Joey Marulli made the observation that I am very similar to Elaine Benes, 1/4 of the great cast ensemble of Seinfeld. The similarities in personality were mind blowing and I chose to not take any offense to this comparison at all. I love Seinfeld. I love Elaine.

Fast forward to last night: December 18th 2010 - my friend Nicole, who has no relation to Carolyn or Joey, asked me (and I quote) "Has anyone ever compared you to Elaine from Seinfeld?" then proceeded to show me this clip in which she noticed how similar we are.

Here are some similarities:
-Loud laugh
-judgmental inner monologue
-absurd conclusions
-obscure conclusions
-hand gestures
-laughing at inappropriate moments
-giving advice
-doing whatever it takes to get what she wants (aka tennis racket/ soup nazi)

This is very interesting to me, and I will continue to investigate this comparison even further:

My beautiful and most talented friends from Columbus (Sam, Stacie, and Lauren) started a food blog called Bagel Monster. I have contributed to it twice with my chicago food adventures. You should totally check it out. There are some tasty treats! Here is my latest post from the blog:

"In Chicago there are many many many MANY mexican places to choose from. In Logan Square particularly you can times that by 40. Predominately a mexican neighborhood with a mixture of middle class families, college students, and people who want to be hip but are annoyed with Wicker Park, Logan Square has a great selection of Mexican restaurants! I would consider Mexican food as one of my all time favorite foods. I mean, I love pizza, but I will never say no to a taco or burrito, plus every place serves nacho chips with a delicious variety of salsas! Of all the places I have tried, which isn’t THAT many, I truly enjoy Taquiera Moran’s right off the California blue line stop at California and Milwaukee. I went there for the first time last January and loved the authenticity and freshness of their food. It is simple, yes, but gets right to the point. Unlike Taco Bell there are no bells and whistles to this place. So tonight after a pretty mundane day at work, and a pretty grueling yoga class yesterday evening, I ventured with my friend to comida heaven. I wish I had my camera to better document the place, but it is a small little joint with about 8 booths and 4 tables. A magnificent mural is painted joyfully through the entire room. After sitting down we are immedietly served fresh nacho chips with 3 different salsas and a bowl of pickled veggies. I look at the menu and quickly order the Chicken Burrito. At $4.59 I know I am going to have lunch for tomorrow. This baby is much bigger than a Chipotle burrito in my opinion, because normally I can demolish and burrito from Chipotle, but I could barely finish half of this monster. Maybe it was the chips? I dunno! Who really cares. The burrito arrived! Filled with mexican rice, fresh tomato, some amazing light sauce, and of course chicken. My friend thought the chicken wasn’t cooked all the way, but boy it was. I’m pretty sure they simmer it in its own magical juices and spices resulting in a really juicy and fresh piece of meat! This to me is authentic mexican food and is something I really really enjoy eating. I would also recommend their tacos (duh) and their magical Margzzzzzz. Nom Nom NOM! So next time you are in Chicago, particularaly Logan Square, stop by Morans and get yourself a tasty treat!"

I love the idea of a calender because it is functional and can be tasteful at the same time, while getting a chance to show my work. As I mentioned before, I am feeling overly stimulated with technology and everything being so instant in my life. The fact that I'm reading a book that deals with digital age of art and commerce called Remix by Lawrence Lessig, I can't stop picking apart the amount of overwhelming stimulation I am receiving on a daily basis. Watching something like this video above makes me nostalgic and impresses me much more than even this laptop I am typing on. My life is color television, and I knew nothing other than that. I even thought life back in the 20s and 30s was in Black and White when I was a kid. Now, as I read this book and watch this video, I think back to the times when I didn't spend 80% of my day on the computer. The times that Facebook or Email wasn't part of my daily vocabulary. Even having a cell phone was something only Zach Morris had. I'm so "in touch" that I feel out of touch. But this Kodachrome film test is just plain amazing and unreal.

This might be the recipe I found on Canelle et Vanille that will actually get me to cook!

Bella Cerise and Raspberry Swirl Frozen Mousse

3 eggs
3 egg yolks
3/4 cup (150 grams) sugar
1/3 cup (100 grams) apricot puree
2 cups (450 ml) heavy cream, whipped to soft peaks
1 1/2 cups (150 grams) raspberries
1 Tbs sugar

Whip the heavy cream to soft peaks and keep in the refrigerator until ready to use.

Puree the raspberries and the sugar and set aside.

Place the eggs, egg yolks and sugar in the bowl of an electric stand mixer. Place the bowl over a water bath and whip the eggs and sugar mixture for about 5 minutes until it thickens. Transfer the bowl to the mixer and continue whipping in high speed until the eggs have cooled. It will be thick. Fold in the apricot puree, followed by the soft peak cream.

Transfer the cream to a glass or metal baking dish or small jars. Spoon in some of the raspberry puree and make swirls through the apricot cream with a spoon or wooden skewer.

Transfer to the freezer and serve frozen.

I should definitely take some cues from this guy. I am going through something I feel many young women go through, I would like to call it now or never. I'm feeling a little heavy on the bottom end of things, and my butt feels like cottage cheese. So I may be exaggerating, but what girl doesn't? I have been told to embrace it, and just let the body do what it was meant to do for millions of trillions of years. BUT I CAN'T! I need to do what that guy up there is doing and work out! My nutritional intake is pretty bad, and since I'm no longer a college student, I should probably not be aloud to drink cheap beer and cheap greeeeeeeeeeeeeeazy pizza at 3am. BUT I WANT TO! So.....if I do the math right: work out+beer+pizza=I think I might be OK? There are so many options to not sit on my butt (except for my job requires a lot of that). Unemployment Yoga at Yoga on High, riding my bike, walking to the grocery store, swimming before it gets to cold.

Speaking of grocery stores: grocery store wars???

Nerding out on up and coming DSLR Cameras that have HD Video Capturing capabilities. The entire Karate Coyote video was shot with one those and it blew my mind! My eyes were twinkling with joy. I just feel stupid recording DVR now, but maybe in 15 or 20 years that will be our version of the Super 8. Whats old is new again.
